Motorways, tolls and vignettes

A motorway vignette is a permit, now often digital and linked to the number plate, that you buy before using the motorways: it is valid for a set period and there are no toll booths.

Up to 3.5 t you need the vignette for motorways and expressways, also as a digital vignette. If you buy it online as a private person, it is valid only from the 18th day after purchase: to leave straight away, buy it at a sales point.

Over 3.5 t there is no vignette: you pay a distance-based toll with the GO-Box device.

Some sections have a separate toll (Streckenmaut), for example the Brenner (A13), the Tauern (A10) and the Arlberg (S16).

Environmental sticker, ZTL and low emission zones

Motorhomes do not need an environmental sticker. Austrian environmental zones mainly concern commercial vehicles; motorways may have environmental speed limits, shown by «IG-L» signs.

Useful rules for motorhome travellers

From 1 November to 15 April, with snow or ice, you need winter tyres; over 3.5 t you must also carry snow chains.

Over 3.5 t the limits are 80 km/h on motorways and 70 outside towns.
